20 Years of Taking on Challenges Against All Odds, FUNZIN Bridges the Future of Defense AI
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, FUNZIN hosted FUNZIN Summit and shared its 20-year technology journey, along with its vision for the future of defense AI.
Held under the theme “The Decision,” the summit served as a forum to discuss how AI can support better human judgment and decision-making in future battlefield environments.
Before the event began, Shirly, CEO of FUNZIN, expressed her deep gratitude for receiving a Certificate of Appreciation from the Chief of Staff of the Republic of Korea Army in recognition of FUNZIN’s contribution to the demonstration of an intelligent decision-making system for the Joint Live Fire Exercise. The certificate was presented on behalf of the Army Chief of Staff by Major General Ryu Seung-ha, Chief of the Informatization Planning Staff Department. The event was attended by more than 200 participants from industry, academia, the military, and research institutions.
Shirly noted that the certificate was not an individual achievement, but the result of the collective efforts of FUNZIN employees and the military officials who have worked together to advance defense innovation. She also reaffirmed FUNZIN’s commitment to contributing to the development of the Republic of Korea’s defense capabilities and national security.

In her welcome remarks, Shirly, CEO of FUNZIN, described FUNZIN’s past 20 years through three meanings of IoT.
The first was Inter Operability Test. FUNZIN began with technologies that connect people in the mobile communications field, building its technical capabilities alongside the growth of Korea’s telecommunications industry.
The second was Internet of Things. As the era expanded from connecting people to connecting things, FUNZIN carried out a range of IoT projects and accumulated expertise in sensors and network technologies. Through this journey, FUNZIN confirmed a clear direction: sensors generate data, networks deliver data, and AI understands the world through data.
The third was In Spite Of That, meaning “against all odds.” Whether challenging new technologies, entering new markets, or stepping into the demanding field of defense, FUNZIN faced countless difficulties. In spite of that, FUNZIN continued to take on challenges, refused to give up, and kept moving forward.
This message continued into the first presentation of The Decision Part 1, titled “In Spite of That, We Decide,” delivered by Shirly. This was followed by a presentation from Jeon Ji-hoon, Head of the AIoT Business Division, who introduced KWM as an AI Advisor and explained how an AI-based command and decision support system can contribute to decision-making on future battlefields. Kim Jong-oh, Head of the AA Office, then presented target recognition and battlefield awareness technologies, focusing on FAIP-mil-sensor for target recognition and FAIP-Being, an ontology for understanding the battlefield.
After the networking session, The Decision Part 2 continued with more detailed presentations on decision-making technologies, on-device AI, and world models. Kang Han-na, Head of the AIoT Innovation Office, introduced optimal mission assignment and decision-making technologies through FAIP-mil-Decision for Weapon Target Assignment (WTA). Executive Director Uhm Ki-tae shared the potential of an on-device AI Advisor, centered on AISS, a solution for command and control of unmanned systems. Finally, Shin Seung-hoon, CTO of FUNZIN, presented how world model-based technologies can play a role in future battlefield environments through FUNZIN’s world model platform, FAIP-MIN&D.
This summit served as an opportunity to see how FUNZIN’s accumulated expertise in communications, IoT, sensors, networks, and AI is expanding into decision support technologies for the defense sector. It was especially meaningful in that FUNZIN shared its core technology philosophy: the role of AI is not to replace people, but to support better human judgment in complex battlefield environments.
Over the past 20 years, FUNZIN has connected people to people and things to things. Now, FUNZIN is building a future that connects AI and people, sensors and decisions, and countless agents.
With FUNZIN Summit as a new milestone, FUNZIN will continue advancing defense AI technologies that contribute to the development of the Republic of Korea’s defense capabilities and national security. |

Defense AI That Detects Even Invisible Threats
On June 4, FUNZIN participated in the Showcase of Counter-Drone Systems for Maneuver Platforms and Infantry, hosted by DAPA (Defense Acquisition Program Administration) at Seungjin Training Center.
Counter-drone operations are not limited to directly neutralizing the drone itself. It is also critical to identify the source of enemy drone control signals and use that information to strike the GCS (Ground Control Station), fundamentally disabling the threat.
In this demonstration, FUNZIN showcased two core solutions: KWM-Ocelot, an AI electromagnetic spectrum reconnaissance system that detects and analyzes enemy electromagnetic signals, and KWM-stA, a MOSA-based MUM-T C2 software solution that generates, assigns, and controls missions for manned-unmanned teaming operations.
In particular, KWM-stA was used as an unmanned system mission control product during the demonstration. Based on the operational situation, it generated autonomous missions and assigned them to a drone equipped with KWM-Ocelot. The KWM-Ocelot-equipped drone then conducted autonomous flight, collected wideband signals across the mission area, and used AI analysis to infer the location of the enemy drone operator.
The detected target information was then linked back to KWM-stA. KWM-stA comprehensively analyzed factors such as distance to the target, travel time, effective range, and current mission status to recommend the optimal response asset.
The final engagement was conducted through a human-in-the-loop process approved by the commander. This reflects FUNZIN’s direction for defense AI: AI does not replace human judgment, but supports commanders in making faster and more accurate decisions in complex battlefield environments.
Based on more than a decade of accumulated communications engineering expertise, as well as validation experience from the Army TIGER Boost Project, combat experiments, and Joint Live Fire Exercise, FUNZIN has continued to verify its defense AI capabilities. This demonstration confirmed that these technologies are expanding into future battlefield counter-drone operations and manned-unmanned teaming.
FUNZIN will continue advancing AI-based technologies for electromagnetic spectrum analysis, signal source detection, autonomous mission generation and assignment, and response asset recommendation, contributing to the Republic of Korea military’s enhanced counter-drone capabilities. |

From June 9 to 11, FUNZIN participated in InLEX KOREA 2026, the Korea Defense Industry Development Exhibition held at the Daejeon Convention Center, where it showcased core defense AI technologies.
One of the key technologies FUNZIN highlighted at this exhibition was a world model for defense. A world model learns the physical laws and environmental changes of the real world to predict future situations. It is drawing attention as an important foundational technology in defense AI, where it is often difficult to secure sufficient real-world battlefield data.
FUNZIN presented an AI virtual battlefield that implements various weapon systems and battlefield conditions in a virtual space, including tanks, artillery, and drones, allowing AI to repeatedly learn from numerous combat scenarios. Beyond a simple simulation, this serves as a learning foundation that helps AI understand battlefield environments and provide more sophisticated decision support in real mission conditions.
FUNZIN also shared its technology direction across several defense AI discussion forums held alongside the exhibition. Shirly, CEO of FUNZIN, delivered a presentation titled “Designing Agentic/Physical AI for Strong Command Decisions” at the KCCS-Army Future Command and Control System Combat Development Seminar, outlining the role AI should play in future command and control systems and the direction for its design.
Jeon Ji-hoon, Vice President of FUNZIN, presented development directions for an AI-based firepower operations control system at the regular meeting of the Long-Range Precision Firepower System Science and Technology Group hosted by the Army Artillery School. This aligns with FUNZIN’s technology direction of improving the speed and precision of firepower operation decisions based on battlefield data and advancing command decisions and firepower operations control through AI.
At the exhibition, FUNZIN also introduced KWM (Kill-Web Matching), its AI-based command and decision support system, along with technologies that connect drones and unmanned ground robots. Together, these technologies demonstrated how world models, Agentic AI, Physical AI, and command and decision support technologies can be connected in future battlefield operations.
FUNZIN will continue advancing world models for defense and AI-based command and decision support technologies optimized for Korea’s military environment, contributing to the development of defense AI and future battlefield innovation in the Republic of Korea.
